History
As part of my study of Dunshaughlin Workhouse, I will carry out a historical investigation. The aims of this investigation are to investigation the relevance of Dunshaughlin Workhouse to the local area and to discover what role the workhouse has played in the past.
In addition to developing my skills as a historian, I also have several aims regarding the educational benefits of using the workhouse within the classroom. These include: identifying where a study of the workhouse would link with the NCCA curriculum, recognising important aspects of history for the children to learn about, evaluating reasons for the children to complete a study of Dunshaughlin Workhouse.
To learn about the history of the workhouse in Dunshaughlin, I will be required to conduct several historical investigations and to harness my skills as an investigator and historian, in order to gather research and information. In order to conduct my research I intend to carry out the following investigations:
Through these investigations I intend to harness my skills as a historian (developing the concepts of time and chronology, change and continuity, cause and effect, empathy, using evidence, developing the skills of communication) (NCCA, 1999), while also educating myself about the workhouse.

In order to conduct my research I intend to carry out the following investigations:
- Inquire locally about the Dunshaughlin Historical Society in order to make contact regarding any information they may have.
- Arrange a meeting with a member of the Dunshaughlin Historical Society.
- Visit my local library and speak with the librarians with regard to sourcing books or pamphlets with information about the workhouse.
- Conduct research online and through the library in order to source a person with information on Dunshaughlin Workhouse.
- Organise an interview with the sourced person.
- Visit the county library in Navan in order to observe, analyse and evaluate some of the Minute Books from the famine years.
- Visit the workhouse and observe its current state.
- Visit the Famine graveyard to find evidence linking it to the workhouse.
Through these investigations I intend to harness my skills as a historian (developing the concepts of time and chronology, change and continuity, cause and effect, empathy, using evidence, developing the skills of communication) (NCCA, 1999), while also educating myself about the workhouse.
